Every year on September 10, the world observes World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), an annual occasion launched by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). The day aims to draw attention to the seriousness of suicide as a global public health issue and to strengthen collective efforts to reduce this tragedy.

According to WHO estimates, more than 700,000 people die by suicide each year worldwide—equivalent to one person every 40 seconds. Suicide ranks among the top four leading causes of death among young people aged 15 to 29.

This year’s theme, “Creating Hope Through Action,” emphasizes that hope is not just an idea but a collective effort that begins with simple steps—listening to others, showing compassion, or providing a supportive environment that encourages help-seeking. Everyone can be part of the solution, whether as a family member, teacher, journalist, or policymaker.

International efforts on this day focus on raising awareness, strengthening psychological support, improving mental health services, and ensuring safe communication channels for those experiencing distress or suicidal thoughts. It is also an opportunity for governments, civil society, and the media to work together to spread consistent messages that promote hope and resilience.

Some countries mark the day with national initiatives—for example, the United States has designated 988 as the national suicide and crisis lifeline. At the same time, World Suicide Prevention Day serves as an umbrella for all nations, ensuring that every person, wherever they are, has the right to a dignified life and access to psychological support when needed.

Commemorating this day goes beyond slogans—it is an open invitation to everyone: let us be there for one another, listen without judgment, and take action together to build a future filled with hope and safety for all.
