Between Floods and Cold… A New Humanitarian Tragedy Strikes Rural Idlib and Lattakia

Sudden floods swept through the rural areas of Idlib and Lattakia on Saturday evening, 7 February 2026, following heavy rainfall and rising water levels. The floods affected more than 300 families in camps and villages, and resulted in the death of two children and a humanitarian volunteer, according to the Syrian Civil Defense. This painful scene reflects the scale of human suffering endured by civilians in these areas.

Field sources reported that floodwaters submerged dozens of tents in 14 camps west of Idlib, displacing families who lost their shelters and basic belongings. Major roads were closed, health centers were forced to evacuate patients, and many residents fled high-risk areas, amid growing fears of worsening conditions due to continued rainfall and cold weather.

Affected families are living in extremely harsh conditions in the open, facing a severe shortage of safe shelter and basic necessities. Children, women, and Older People have become the most vulnerable, with increasing health and psychological risks resulting from shock and loss of safety.

It is worth noting that camps in northwestern Syria experienced similar floods last year that caused widespread damage. At that time, Hope Revival Organization took part in the humanitarian response by supporting affected families and alleviating their suffering, underscoring the importance of humanitarian preparedness and continued solidarity in the face of recurring disasters.
